Project summary
Minh Phu Seafood Corporation is the biggest shrimp producer in Vietnam. In recent years the company has experienced losses due to shrimp disease, low prices for conventional shrimp products and price volatility. Furthermore, low quality of seed and shrimp affected the production. The application of ASC standards is an incentive and effective way to address these issues. This project aims to achieve sustainable produced shrimp, minimize negative impact on the environment and contribute to the development of communities and society through the application of ASC standards and the integration into the global market. Subsequently, to generate widespread positive impacts to the entire shrimp industry in Vietnam and the region. The project aims to produce 3,000 MT of ASC shrimp by the end of 2016. Through the project and application of ASC shrimp standards, the farm will upgrade its infrastructure, apply more sustainable practices and use more responsible feed and high quality seed.
Minh Phu Seafood Corp. (MPS) established a vertical integrated system including seed production, growth-out shrimp farm, feed manufacture, processing plant, biological products processing plant, laboratory, trader company, etc. The Minh Phu-Kien Giang shrimp farm is one of many companies of Minh Phu Seafood Corp. The project is not only to strengthen sustainable production capacity of Minh Phu-Kien Giang shrimp farm but also to enhance the capacity of the other companies throughout the chain (i.e. improving seed and feed quality; using biological products; ensuring food safety; etc.). Through the application of ASC shrimp standards, it also aims to meet the demand of international buyers and strengthen the brand of MPS.
Minh Phu Seafood Corporation started the project in September 2014 with the target of producing 3,000 tons of ASC certified whiteleg shrimp. The project has been implemented by Minh Phu Kien Giang Farm located at Kien Luong District, Kien Giang province from May 2014 to December 31, 2016. After nearly two years, Minh Phu Kien Giang farm has reached the target of the project. According to its annual report in April 2016, the shrimp output of the farm reached 3,089 tons.
The company is also willing to share experiences from the project with other companies. ASC certification brings opportunities for Minh Phu’s shrimp products to gain access to potential markets in the world.
