Senior Program Manager, NISCOPS – Haryana, India

Your role:

You are an Senior Program Manager who will report to the Director Markets India with a matrix reporting to the Head of Markets – Landscapes and Regional Director – Landscapes and will be responsible for leading the NISCOPS program in India which will involve defining and implementing.

Who you are:

National Initiatives for Sustainable & Climate Smart Oil Palm Smallholders (NI-SCOPS) is a joint IDH Solidaridad program to ensure that landscapes where oil palms are grown are managed sustainably, and smallholders measurably benefit from their inclusion in oil palm markets.  The India Market workstream includes work on both the policy side as well as working with small and large businesses to bring home the importance of sustainable palm oil sourcing.

What you bring:

  • Market Development: Focus on India as the largest importer of palm oil, accounting for 11% of the total. Work includes understanding consumption patterns, supporting policy development, and improving value chain systems. Define the business case in the Indian context for committing to sourcing sustainably sourced palm oil for the Indian buyers. Create an environment that will facilitate increased demand for sustainable palm oil in India for domestic consumption, such that there is wider acceptance amongst consumers, companies and governments on the significance of sustainable palm oil. Identify and analyse market developments, business development-related knowledge, trends within the industry and sustainable palm oil, and initiate internal knowledge sharing. Draft and implement a Strategic Plan and roadmap for regional market work in NISCOPS program in India.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with key stakeholders from the public and private sectors and NGOs in India to understand challenges and opportunities in the palm oil market. Engage with key stakeholders within Indian government both at the national and the state level. Local engagement with the embassies and their work on Palm Oi: the Dutch Embassy, UK Embassy, Indonesian Embassy, Malaysian Embassy. Assess which global companies would be keen to collaborate with IDH for sustainable palm production as well as market convening.
  • Policy Advocacy: Support the development of the Indian Palm Oil Sustainability Framework (IPOS) and promote sustainability practices in palm oil production and trade. Engage with government officials and industry associations to drive policy change.
  • Regional Cooperation: Collaborate with the Asian Sustainable Palm Oil Network (ASPN) to promote sustainable palm oil trade and production among countries like India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Map and engage with existing programs on Palm Oil and work closely to align their agendas.
  • Market Transformation: Work with market players and governments to prioritize sustainability in palm oil production and trade. Facilitate dialogues, develop business cases, and advocate for policy changes to promote responsible sourcing practices. Monitor and ensure implementation of the Pilot programs. Introduce business and brands to landscapes in India and abroad with a view to establishing working relationship between procurement teams and these landscapes.
  • Data Management and Reporting: Capture and report on national palm oil imports in India to monitor the uptake of responsibly sourced palm oil and track progress towards sustainability goals. Prepare and lead in proposal development, concept notes, investment committee notes, and program summaries as required to support the growth of the program.
  • Market Insights: Deliver market insight to analyse and develop programs and solutions that will address the sustainability agenda for Palm Oil India and at the larger level for Edible Oils.

All the above and related activities are expected to lead to the following outcomes:

  • Government support of sustainable palm oil production at national and state levels.
  • Government support for import of sustainable palm oil.
  • Clear indication of support and participation from the Ministries of Commerce, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution.
  • Pre-competitive collaboration between companies to arrive at a common vision and goals for sustainable palm oil production and consumption.
